“You only have to look at how Westminster is treating those who put them there to realise something has to change – zero hour contracts, mental health provision drastically cut, community centres and libraries closed on a whim, the rising level of homelessness, food banks deemed ‘good for communal spirit’ by politicians, landlord led accommodation (mostly absentee too), abysmal investment in social/affordable housing, schools peddling tick box education (this is changing in Wales with the new curriculum though), punishing people for struggling and falling off the edge of society, many of these being people who are in work too and pushing the NHS to crisis point so that it can be privatised and no one blinks an eye then of course there is Brexit….I could go on. My point being it is time we looked to ourselves to create the sort of society we want; a society based on mutuality, collaboration, connection, tolerance, inclusivity, sustainability and hope.
This isn’t an idealistic vision. It is based on practical considerations – we have the natural resources, we have the strength of spirit, we have an infrastructure upon which to build good jobs, good homes, good lives. Further, look at our heritage and history. The Miner’s Institutes, the libraries, the medical aid societies, The Chartists, Rebeccas, Scotch Cattle, Suffragettes, Merthyr and Newport Risings, Women of Greenham Common, Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg, those who went to fight against fascism in The Spanish Civil War and The Miners’ strike of 84/85. Look at our poets, writers, actors, boxers, athletes, artists, thinkers, musicians and politicians. Look how we have welcomed people from all over the world and they have given this tiny massive land so much.
We are a culture not prepared to sit down and simply take it.
So in my opinion it is time we stood up again and faced the enemy without fear.
We can learn from our tragic yet glorious past and instigate a positive hard working shining future. A future where no one is homeless. Where everyone has a decent place to call home. Where everyone has a meaningful life supporting job. Where everyone has access to a dentist and a doctor. Where aspiration is not limited by postcode. Where everyone will be cared for and supported in old age. Where everyone, no matter age, gender, class, colour, religion, disability, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation is equal.”

Fy mhwynt yw hyn: mae’n hen i ni edrych ar bopeth sydd gyda ni a gafael yn yr hyn sydd ei angen arnom i greu’r math o gymdeithas rydyn ni ein hunain am ei gweld; cymdeithas wedi ei seilio ar gydymddibyniaeth, cydweithio, cyd-gysylltu, goddefgarwch, cynwysoldeb, cynaliadwyedd a gobaith.
Nid gweledigaeth ddelfrydol yw hon. Mae wedi ei seilio ar ystyriaethau ymarferol – mae gyda ni’r adnoddau naturiol, mae ein hysbryd yn gadarn, mae gyda ni’r isadeiledd i gynnal swyddi da, cartrefi da a bywydau da. Ar ben hynny, edrychwch ar ein hanes a’n treftadaeth: Ein llyfrgelloedd, ein Sefydliadau’r Glowyr, y cymdeithasau cymorth meddygol, Y Siartwyr, Merched Becca, Y Teirw Scotch, Y Swffragetiaid, Gwrthryfeloedd Merthyr a Chasnewydd, menywod Comin Greenham, Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg, y Cymry a aeth i ymladd yn erbyn Ffasgiaeth yn Rhyfel Cartref Sbaen a Streic y Glowyr 1984/5. Edrychwch ar ein beirdd, sgwenwyr, actorion, bocswyr, athletwyr, artistiaid, meddylwyr, cerddorion a gwleidyddion. Edrychwch ar sut yr ydym wedi croesawu pobl o bob rhan o’r byd yma a’r cyfan y maen nhw hefyd wedi ei gyfrannu i’r wlad fach anferth yma. Nid diwylliant sy’n bodloni ar wneud dim yw hon, nid pobl sy’n gwneud dim ond eistedd ar ein tinnau a derbyn popeth yn llywaeth ydym ni.
Felly yn fy marn i mae’n bryd i ni sefyll ar ein traed eto ac edrych i fyw llygad y gelyn heb ofni dim.”
